Alcohol Marketing and Young People: Causes for Concern – Free Webinar

Join us for insight, understanding and strategies for action to address the impact that alcohol advertising is having on children and young people. Event will be of interest to parents, teachers, coaches, youth workers, Drug and Alcohol Task Forces and those working in the area of public health.

ICAAN are delighted to announce an amazing line up of speakers for this 90 minute webinar on 3rd November at 9:30am.

Dr Pat Kenny from the School of Marketing in Dublin Technological University will provide an understanding of the negative impact that alcohol marketing has on children and young people and will talk about the importance of the Public Health Alcohol Act in limiting children’s exposure to alcohol advertising.

Dr Grainne Ketelaar from the Letterkenny Institute of Technology will focus on the ways in which young people’s data is mined and extracted by the alcohol and advertising industries for the purposes of hooking the next generation of drinkers.

Maik Dünnbier is the Director of Strategy and Advocacy at Movendi International, the largest global social movement for development through alcohol prevention and control and Maik will talk about “Acting Locally, Thinking Globally – strategies to prevent risk to young people from the alcohol norm”.

Meath Library Resource – The “Mind Yourself Guide” 

The “Mind Yourself Guide”  is a Mental Health and Wellbeing Reading Guide that’s a fantastic resource. Children’s Books Ireland (CBI) have made it available for download here: https://cbi-reading-guides-archive.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/CBI-ReadingGuide_Mind_Yourself.pdf

Parents can use it to discover relevant books to support their children around worries, sadness, loneliness, anxiety and any number of feelings they many want to explore. Currently, with Level 3 restrictions  libraries aren’t open to the public for  browsing. However, Users can still collect and return books and request online.

Understanding Stigma and Dealing with Discrimination – Online Course

The Dublin North, North East Recovery College in collaboration with Dublin City University invite you to attend Understanding Stigma and Dealing with Discrimination Weekly Online Course.

Start Date: Thursday October 22nd.  Format: Four Weekly 1.5 hour sessions

Foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt can cause obesity in childhood if eaten regularly. If giving treat foods to your kids, follow the kids pyramid and offer only tiny amounts, once a week at the most.

Making sure your child gets enough iron is really important. Offer them 3 servings of red meat a week, and choose breakfast cereals with added iron.

Young children don’t get enough Vitamin D naturally in winter and so it’s important that they get it in supplement form. 5 micrograms (5ug) a day from Hallowe’en to St Patrick’s Day is best.
