Equality Fund 2020 – 2023: Rethink Ireland

Equality Fund 2020 – 2023

At Rethink Ireland, we know that Ireland is not an equal place for everyone who lives here. We are committed to partnering with civil society organisations to challenge these inequalities and to create a country where everyone can feel accepted and thrive.

That is why on July 13th we launched the Equality Fund 2020 – 2023.

This €3 million Fund is supported by the Peter Kinney and Lisa Sandquist Foundation and the Government of Ireland. This Fund will support organisations and groups that empower marginalised communities and tackle systemic inequality.

The fund wants to partner with civil society organisations to enhance equality for one or more of the following communities:

  1. Traveller and Roma people
  2. Migrant people, (including people in need of  international protection)
  3. People from minority ethnic communities
  4. LGBTI+ people
  5. People with disabilities
  6. People living in poverty

We also wish to support freedom of civil society, solidarity between groups, collaborations and community work approaches.

This Fund has three strands:

  • Empowering Women: This strand supports projects to empower more women from minority communities into employment. This strand will also fund projects which support women who are employed on an informal basis, in low paying jobs, or who find it difficult to assert their rights.

  • Strengthening Communities: This strand supports projects which empower communities to advocate for themselves. They will strengthen equality in Ireland through community work and collective action.

  • Building Equality Together: This strand supports projects or networks to work together to enhance equality. We seek applications from two or more organisations who have come together to promote equality. This includes existing networks and collaborations.

We are currently accepting applications to this fund before 5 pm on Monday, September 14th, 2020.

We will be hosting several webinars over the next few weeks that will provide potential applicants with further information on the Equality Fund and the application process. We would greatly appreciate you sending this information to other relevant organisations in your network.

In the meantime please check out our website for more information about this fund. Any queries can be directed to [email protected]

Information workshop for Travellers and Roma starting college

Starting college or any new course can be challenging at the best of times. During the Coronavirus pandemic this challenge becomes even harder. For all students there have been loads of different challenges that made finishing years or completing courses pretty tough going. With September just around the corner, students may be feeling anxious about what to expect.

Are you a Traveller or Roma who may be starting a new course or preparing for your first day in a new college? Come join us for the first in a series of Whidden Workshops – it’s Kushti to Rokker, next Friday the 31st of July where we will have a number of Traveller and Roma students getting together on Zoom. These students will share their stories while also offering up advice for any prospective students from each of their communities.

There will be Traveller and Roma students who are currently studying Business, Community and Youth Work, Teaching, in apprenticeships and a number of others joining in to talk about their experience.

The event is being hosted by Cork Institute of Technology, Maynooth University and College Connect. If you’d like any further information you can call or email Declan at 087 331 3412 or [email protected]. Zoom link by email only.

Christmas Day in the Summer: Supporting the importance of play and physical activity for Vulnerable Children during a period of societal change and stress

At the beginning of July, 500 Activity Packs targeting 223 vulnerable families were distributed to support children aged 0-13 years during COVID 19. The initiative was led by Meath Springboard Family Support Services and jointly funded by Meath Children and Young People’s Services Committee (CYPSC) and Meath County Council. The overall aim of the activity packs was to support parents of vulnerable children to engage their children in play and physical activity as an important part of daily routine during the current Covid 19 pandemic.

Meath Springboard Family Support Services worked in collaboration with partner organisations in Co. Meath, namely, Kells People’s Resource Centre, Trim FRC, East Coast FRC, Meath Partnership, Meath Local Sports Partnership (LSP), Tusla Social Work, Tusla Prevention Partnership and Family Support and Tusla Child and Family Support Networks. Packing took place on 1st July, 2020 in the Sports Hall, Claremount Stadium, Navan while observing all public health COVID 19 guidelines. The activity packs were put together to support the Family Fun Games which are detailed on the Meath  LSP website http://www.meathsports.ie/being-active-during-covid-19/family-fun-games/. Each pack was put together based on the number and age of  children per family. The play materials chosen for each child were broken down into age categories as follows: 0-11 months, 1-3 years, 3-6 years, 6-9 years,  9-12 years and 12+.

An Example of activity playpack contents for 3-6 years included plastic tea set, paw patrol plush ball, fairy/prin/unicorn fun puzzle, doctor set and chalk board with chalk and eraser. An example of activity playpack contents for 6-9 years included draughts, football, block tech building blocks, large bubbles and boom bat. The contents were also chosen to support minimal parental support demands as it was felt that the capacity of parents will vary for different reasons at this time – personal issues, working from home, working out of home and caring for other family members for example. The packs were designed so that children can open out the contents and get on with playing. The activity packs were collected by the organisations involved and delivered to 500 vulnerable children across the county of Meath. Initial feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive with some noting that they were surprised by the quality and quantity of the overall activity pack content. On receiving the activity packs some of the parents also described it as being like Christmas Day in the Summer . Unlike Christmas Day, the parents were as surprised as the children!
